Nowadays, every night is a ‘movie night.’ According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, watching TV was the most popular leisure activity in 2020. Every day, the average American watched over three hours of TV, up 19 minutes per day compared to 2019.

Each week, consumers look forward to new episodes of their favorite shows. At the end of 2021, HBO and HBO Max grew to a combined 73.8 million subscribers globally, up more than 13 million a year prior, says Adweek. The high-profile return of award-winning show Succession along with the highly anticipated Sex And The City reboot, And Just Like That, had subscribers soaring and the internet buzzing. 2021 added the most subscribers of any year in HBO’s history.

This record-breaking year comes just ahead the monumental WarnerMedia and Discovery merger. Announced in early 2021, the two companies will soon combine their media assets to create a new streaming-centric media company, named Warner Bros. Discovery. AT&T CEO John Stankey told Adweek the company is “moving into final preparations.” In the deal, AT&T will receive $43 billion cash and debt securities, and WarnerMedia will be spun off and combined with Discovery.

The deal is the first major merger since Viacom and CBS recombined in December 2019. The media landscape will reshape once again once the WarnerMedia division—which includes Warner Bros., HBO, TNT, TBS, CNN, Cartoon Network and HBO Max—combines with Discovery’s portfolio—which includes Discovery, HGTV, TLC, ID, Food Network, OWN, the upcoming Magnolia Network and Discovery+.
