Viewpoint: A Supplier's Reflections

Unfortunately it's not just our industry - and certainly not just distributors at fault - and I think it boils down to the fact that we're not raising collaborative, respectful kids. We're raising kids to be competitive and are teaching them to go out and get "theirs". That mindset undermines the creative - let's win together - attitude and places less importance on courtesy and appreciation and more importance on being out front at all cost. No one ever accomplished anything on their own (even if they think they did, they're wrong) so yes, a little more transparency and appreciation would definitely go a long way.

Who’s Your Service Superhero? Nominations Open

I would like to submit Josh Gruettner. I know the posting deadline is closed (hopefully there is another around the corner), but Josh is too great of a partner not to submit. Josh is the definition of a service super hero! In the multiple years I have worked with him, he has never complained about an impossible deadline, ridiculous request or insane demand. He is full of a seemingly unending supply of patience and positivity! While the products may be simple in nature, we know that providing a level of customer first service often isn’t. While customer’s are willing to often trade great service for a cheap product, Josh seems to make it his mission to provide both. He finds ways to offer it quicker, faster and for a cheaper price, but then throws on top of that a level of service unparalleled in our industry. His additional offering, to make his customer’s lives easier, comes at the expense of making his own life more difficult. However he takes on that burden with a smile, a solution and a commitment that makes sure the customer is always happy with the product and blown away with the service. He not only takes the time to sort out the details to make sure things are perfect, he also invests and imparts his knowledge on his customer’s so they better understand what they are ordering and are able to make sure they are getting exactly what they need. His approach to customer satisfaction is one I thought long lost in the day of text messages and kiosks, one with a personal touch and a passion to help!

In Memoriam: Irene Kogutt

I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Irene Kogutt. I remember her as smart, kind, and an extremely competent business woman. I always enjoyed seeing Michael at industry shows and catching on what was going on with his mother. All the professional business women now in the industry owe special homage to Irene who set the path for them. My prayers and sympathy to all the Kogutt family.

In Memoriam: John Pagano

I met John when he was the rep for Columbia Pen & pencil when Manny was VP . I was also very active in SAGGny when he was President in the 70's. I was also in charge of the dinner/dance when we held at the Concord Hotel. He was a great person. I will miss John. He was a big help to me when I started J&L Concepts in New York 41 years ago.
