Last week, PPAI Government Relations Manager Seth Barnett joined the American Society of Association Executives’ (ASAE) American Associations Day 2013 in Washington, D.C. ASAE’s American Association Day is the organization’s legislative fly-in, bringing association professionals around the country to Capitol Hill to meet with legislators and their staff on issues that affect the country’s nonprofits.
As PPAI’s representative, Barnett sought to educate legislators on the value that trade organizations such as the Association bring to businesses, and to ensure they have the same rights as other nonprofits. 501(c)6 trade associations such as PPAI are affected differently by tax regulations for the nonprofit community. In speaking with congressional staff and lawmakers, Barnett and the other association representatives attending the fly-in explained the differences between nonprofit trade associations, charities and other organizations, and why it is vital to ensure legislation does not undermine the country’s trade associations.
In D.C. and while traveling with four other representatives from Texas-based associations, Barnett met with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and his staff as well as the staffers from the offices of Texas Sen. John Cornyn and Michigan Sen. Carl Levin.
