Professional women are a force in the promotional products industry and they are driving innovation, leadership and growth to the bottom line. More than 150 industry women will gather this week in Atlanta, Georgia, for the 2016 PPAI Women's Leadership Conference.

This year's event includes an outstanding line-up of experts on topics ranging from leadership to strategic planning to operational excellence. In honor of this year's WLC, Promotional Consultant Today shares insights from a few of our speakers, including the following insights from Colette Carlson—a keynote speaker and human behavior expert.

Carlson focuses on the importance of connection in being an effective leader. By creating a connection with others, you are able to establish trust. Here are three ways she suggests to lead with warmth, and connect more effectively with everyone you meet:

1. Genuine Gestures. Thanks to mirror neurons, most individuals are savvy enough to feel the difference between a leader who truly cares and one who is simply going through the motions. Genuine smiles crinkle the eyes that are also focused on the individual, rather than darting around the room due to distractions. Listening with both head and heart includes acknowledging nods and thoughtful follow-up questions. Polite (not abrupt) requests are critical.

2. Share Your Story. Recently, I had the privilege of following a leader on the platform who told his high-performing team what keeps him up at night. Given my position in the room, I witnessed individuals putting down their smartphones and pens, leaning in and listening fully. Our personal stories laced with truth and vulnerability make us human and relatable.

3. Speak Your Truth. Leaders who encourage teams to "take some down time" at the same time they dramatically increase project loads are disingenuous. Sales people who tell prospective customers "I'm not here to sell you anything" aren't telling the truth. After all, how can others trust you when you send mixed messages?

Mastering the art of putting others at ease, thus fostering that vital human connection, will ensure confidence in your leadership.
