In Memoriam: Mark Patterson

Mark Patterson, CEO of Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based supplier Eco Lips (UPIC: EcoLips), died in his home on August 11 after a sudden and unexpected illness. He was 34.

Well known within the local community and the natural products industry as a longtime supporter of an active organic lifestyle, Patterson shared his passion with others through his activism and commitment to environmental initiatives. He organized numerous events to create awareness of how human beings can live an increasingly conscious lifestyle. The Eco Lips Earth Day Bike Ride, held in Cedar Rapids for years, brought the community together through Patterson’s leadership. In 2007, he helped plan and participated in the Organic Endurathon, an event consisting of 10 marathons in 10 days across the state of Iowa to promote organics and sustainability at the local level.

Patterson is survived by his wife, Sarah; son, Luke; and daughters Elizabeth and Lily. As Patterson was the sole provider to his wife and children, a memorial fund has been set up for his children via the Eco Lips website at http://www.ecolips.com/mark to receive donations.

Says Steve Shriver, founder and former CEO of Eco Lips: “I have lost a close and important friend in my life, and our company will miss his expertise, his delight of being and his powerful engagement while working and playing within the organic arena. I have assumed his duties as acting CEO until decisions can be made within the company for new leadership.”
