The Plastic Pennies program (PlasticPennies.com) was designed to keep an estimated 75 million pounds of PVC from used gift cards out of landfills each year. The program lets consumers mail or drop off used cards and earn rewards for doing so. Cards are then recycled into new gift cards or other items, such as park benches. Retailers can get in on the program by placing drop-off boxes in stores and gifting unused card balances to charity.
